The Fifth Avenue Theater - Volunteer Opportunities

The Fifth Avenue Theater

1308 5th Ave, Seattle, WA 98101 (Downtown Seattle)

https://www.5thavenue.org/

Volunteer Opportunities in their words:

Our volunteers primarily help us during shows scanning tickets or helping our guests find their seats. They help us in our Producer’s Club (a lounge below the theater) checking in guests and letting our guests know when the show is about to start. Beyond that, every so often we will have volunteers help at our Education events at the library or other venues. And once a year we have our Gala Fundraiser and will have volunteers help with various tasks from set up to recording paddle numbers during the live auctions.

More details, including a description of ushering responsibilities, can be found at the link:  Volunteer at 5th Avenue Theater

How to start:

In order to start volunteering, please email your request to volunteer@5thavenue.org.  No background check is involved.  You will then be added to the volunteer wait-list, and potentially invited to the next Zoom orientation, usually at the beginning of the season in the late summer or early fall.  There is no annual fee involved.   The dress code when volunteering at shows is a white top and black pants.

 Benefits:

The main benefit of volunteering is free entry to the show you are working.  Each performance, there is a bank of seats reserved for volunteers, to which they are released a few minutes before the curtain goes up.  Volunteers can also buy up to 4 tickets per show at a reduced rate of $30 per ticket.

Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage (Sweat, Ruined)
Presented in Partnership with The Hansberry Project

“Feisty comedy is on the menu” (Washington Post) in two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage’s latest Broadway triumph.  Creating the perfect sandwich is the shared quest of the formerly incarcerated kitchen staff of Clyde’s, a truck stop cafe. Even as the shop’s mischievous owner tries to keep them under her thumb, the staffers are given purpose and permission to dream—finding that “sometimes a hero is more than a sandwich” (New York Times).

“Nottage’s delightful play dares to flip the paradigm. Though it’s still about dark things, including prison, drugs, homelessness and poverty, it somehow turns them into bright comedy.” – The New York Times

“A flavor-bomb of a comedy about survival, second chances, and digesting whatever life serves up.” – Variety

This election year satire, set during 2016-17 with an all-female-presenting cast, holds an unfiltered mirror while asking us how truthfully we see ourselves.

All performances offer tickets at the $5 "Inclusion Rate."

Once the teenager in question registers for their Pass, they can use either their digital Pass, or a physical key fob they request, to take advantage of the program.

When Elizabeth Brigmann’s father dies suddenly, she decides to return to the small town that shunned her for coming out as gay twelve years earlier. Amid the outwardly-cheery glow of 1950’s rural America, Elizabeth and her partner, Kate, must navigate the lurking disapproval of the town, the teetering success of Elizabeth’s family business, and her family's (quite literal) deals with the Devil. The Devil’s dirty (and downright Mozartian) scheme to run the young couple out of town hinges on his assertion that ‘American prejudice’ is immovable and that he can make the townspeople hate what they don’t understand with the smallest nudge. But – as Kate already knows and the Devil himself fears – people will surprise you.

Terms to Know and Love

Here are some common terms you will see when discussing how or why a show or performance has shown up on our radar:

PWYC - Pay-What-You-Choose, mostly synonymous with PWYW (Pay What You Will), Sliding Scale, or Choose Your Price - This format encourage cardholders to decide how much they want or can pay for a ticket, often but not always with a minimum requirement.

Previews - Mostly used for theatrical performances, previews are the first few public performances of a production, before their official opening night.  Preview performances are often offered at a discount, but be aware that if there are bugs to work out in the performance it will be now, when the performers are less rehearsed

Rush - Some organizations sell discounted tickets left over in the hours before a performance.   These will often be a good deal, but require flexibility.

Industry Night - While most theatrical productions run Thursday or Friday through Sunday on a given weekend, many shows will schedule at least performance on week night, often a Monday or Tuesday.  This allows people "in the industry" to attend when their schedule may conflict otherwise.   All are welcome to attend, however, and these tickets are often but not always lower in price than other performances.

Museum Pass Guide

The Seattle Public Library's Museum Pass program is one of the best ways to see a ton of cultural institutions on a minimal budget.  It allows you to reserve free tickets online using your library card.   King County Library also offers a similar program.

Organizations on Museum Pass include:

The Woodland Park Zoo

The Seattle Aquarium

The Museum of Pop Culture (MoPop)

Seattle Art Museum

The Henry Gallery

The Burke Museum

and many others!

Each day, at 12 noon, the passes become available for 29 days from the day in question.   For example, if you're looking to attend on a Tuesday, the tickets will first hit the reservation system on the Monday four weeks prior.   All passes admit at least two people, though some include up to four.

When navigating, you can either select a particular day, to see which passes are currently available, or you can select the museum from the drop down and it will let you know which days you can still claim.

Once you've selected a date, you'll be presented with a blurb that advised you of how many people the pass will admit, and a description of the organization.

Click the button that says REQUEST, and you'll be taken to a page where you need to enter in your library card number.   The pass will then be reserved for you.

You can reserve one pass every 30 days, but if you change your mind about a future reservation, you do have the option to release for use by another patron, at which point you can reserve another.

If, at any time, you need to remind yourself of which pass you have reserved for which day, you can check your existing reservation on the Museum Pass website.

Once a pass is reserved, you will be sent the voucher via email, and on the date of your reservation, you simply need to present a print-out of your email as well as your photo ID.

The link to reserve your tickets is below:

"Sweets by Kate" Lowbrow Opera Collective, Theater Off Jackson, International District

"Clyde's," ArtsWest, West Seattle

2022 Tony Award® Nominated Best Play by
Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage (Sweat, Ruined)

Welcome to Budget Arts in King County!

I'm a lover of the arts - especially performance arts - who tries to go to as many performances, shows, and exhibits as her budget and time allow.  I figured it was high time a calendar and guide were developed to help people out with similar interests.  I'm always glad to find more options, so if there's something I'm missing that should be highlighted, hit me up at budget.arts.in.king.county@gmail.com.  Thanks for checking in!
