Dacha Theatre

Dacha Theater throws a bit of chaos into their performances, through immersive theater and productions with randomized roles. They are known for their "dice" series, which takes on classic works, like this summer's "A Midsummer's Night's Dream," has each cast member memorize the entire play, then assigns roles at random using dice at the start of the show. This is a format unique to Dacha, developed out of their cast member's jokes about wanting to play all the parts.  They also have a series of interactive theater, including this season's "The Veil," where audience members actively tried to piece together the course of events to affect the play's finale.

In Their Words

Dacha is a Russian word that doesn’t have an English equivalent. Roughly, it means “cottage” — a country cabin, a retreat from the hum and bustle of everyday life. But a dacha is also a frame of mind. It is a time apart, a world in miniature with its own rules, customs, and rituals. A dacha is a place to reconnect and restore our faith in each other, where the generations mingle and help each other grow older.

dacha marks the passage of time. It is a place, but also an experience of place, the combination of roofbeams, and gables, and casseroles, and cigarettes, and late-night conversation, and sun, and swimming, and most importantly, memories.

Although the word "dacha" can’t be translated, the feeling of it can. Our dacha is a place of ordered chaos, of rumpus, of play. We think that art tends to turn out better when everyone's voice is heard, and we find the stories that most need to be told include a little bit of mirth, a little bit of sadness, and a little bit of whimsy.

Dacha was founded in 2016, following a backyard production of Dream Things True. Our shows range from world premieres of daring new works, to innovative ways to bring classics back to life (like our Dice format), to original and spectacular immersive events that challenge the boundaries of what audiences can do.

Affordable Ticket Options

All performances have Pay What You Can pricing for individual tickets, starting at $1.  Each show also has programmed engagement events, like talk-backs, pop-up jams or workshops, and opportunities for the community to build or play-test their shows.

Dacha also has a Pay-What-You-Can subscription program, which gives subscribers access to sneak peaks, open rehearsals, bespoke prizes, and special seating that helps them connect with other subscribers.

Volunteer Opportunities

Most of Dacha's traditional volunteer duties, like ushering, box office, and set-building, are handled by existing artists within their group.  They are, however, considering adding additional volunteers for ushering.  If interested, please email dachaaudiences@gmail.com
